THERAPY

Expat Coaching

Therapy – CBT, ACT, Compassion focused, Talk Therapy – is often one of the most effective paths to healing when any type of mental health or emotional concern is affecting your daily life and your function in it.

Therapy helps you learn about what you’re feeling, the reasons behind the emotional response, and how to manage them. It aims to help you cope with challenging life problems – from dealing with traumatic events and experiences to handling anxiety and depression or managing harmful emotions and behaviours.

By nature, therapy looks at what is happening in the present and how this has been affected by past events – be these recent experiences such as divorce, bereavement or redundancy or the distant past such as abuse, neglect or adoption, but to name a few.

Life Coaching looks at what is happening in the present, where you are at with your life right now, and helps you envisage and mould where you want to move your life to in the future, putting stepping stones in place to achieve these goals.

At One Life Coaching, we are formally trained in both because we have long believed that there’s no point moving towards the future if you are still carrying the negative thought patterns, limiting views or negative emotions of the past. There is no point clearing the heavy baggage of the past only to say, “Great, I’m glad I know all this, but where to now?”

Having used the double technique for over a decade, we at One Life Coaching can also quickly assess how much you need of one and how much you need of the other and in what combination. It makes the whole process more potent, leading to results that are quicker to realise and long-lasting in their effects.

Expat Coaching
  • Overwhelm. This makes you feel like you have too many issues to cope with or things to do. You may feel like you cannot take a moment to rest or even breathe. Being stressed and overwhelmed can lead to serious physical health concerns.
  • Fatigue. This symptom which can be seen physically is often the result of or accompanies mental health issues such as depression. It can cause you to sleep longer than you usually would and make it challenging to get out of bed in the morning.
  • Disproportionate rage, anger, or resentment. Feeling anger is normal. If anything, it makes us more human. However, when it is not suitable for the circumstance or too excessive, seeking help to deal with the feelings will be a good idea, especially if the anger leads to violent or possibly harmful situations.
  • Agoraphobia. It is a fear of being in a place that you might become trapped in or unable to escape from. It could lead to panic attacks, and some people might even find it challenging to leave their homes.
  • Anxious or intrusive thoughts. Worrying about things from time to time is normal. However, when it takes a significant portion of your day and develops into anxiety, causing substantial emotional distress and physical symptoms, therapy and coaching will be necessary.
  • Apathy. When you lose interest in your everyday activities, the environment around you and life in general, it might be a sign of mental health issues such as anxiety or depression. At One Life Coaching, we can help you find the cause, defeat the symptoms and work towards a better and healthier future.
  • Hopelessness. Feeling hopeless sometimes, especially after a difficult period, isn’t unusual but losing hope or motivation, or feeling like there is no future for you, can indicate a mental health condition.
  • Social withdrawal. Many people enjoy spending time alone but can also function in social settings. However, therapy and coaching will be essential if you feel distressed around other people or fear being near them. They can help you understand and deal with the feelings and help you take the necessary steps for a more connected future.

While there are many situations for which therapy and coaching will be appropriate, we will look at some of the most crucial ones below.

Abuse

Abuse is when others treat you in a harmful manner that compromises your safety. It can present itself in several forms; some are emotional, physical, financial or sexual. And it causes you to feel a sense of shame and lack of self-worth. Regrettably, the phrase “damaged goods” has been used to such a vast extent when referring to those who survived abuse that many believe it’s true. At One Life Coaching, we can help you understand how the incident has made you feel and work through them to change your perspective and help you feel better about yourself. With dedication and effort, you can let go of the pain and thrive in your life.

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)

It is a condition that typically starts in early childhood but can also persist into adulthood. Those affected may have impulsive tendencies, be hyperactive or find it challenging to pay attention. These behavioural patterns can be managed through Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) or Behavioural Therapy; both are available at One Life Coaching.

Addictions

Addiction is the name given to a condition when you become overly dependent on something, often when you’re trying to escape from other issues. There are many things you can be addicted to, including:

  • Alcohol
  • Gambling
  • Drugs
  • Sex
  • Shopping
  • The internet

At One Life Coaching, we will use therapy to help you address the causes of your addiction and stop the behaviour. Through coaching, we will place stepping stones that you can reach to achieve the life you desire.

Adoption

The relationship between parents and children is crucial to a child’s emotional state regardless of their age. Therefore, when you are adopted, it can affect you in various ways. You may:

  • Feel a sense of loss or rejection
  • Be confused and burdened by having to split loyalties
  • Feel depressed and disappointed
  • Be in emotional turmoil

At One Life Coaching, using therapy, you can understand how being adopted has affected you and explore the problems you are experiencing and solutions for them.

Anger

Anger is an essential emotion that helps propel us forwards. However, if you were brought up in an environment where you were not encouraged to express it healthily, you could resort to displaying it uncontrollably. Therefore, your personal and work life may be affected. You will act impulsively, have difficulty thinking clearly, and become violent and aggressive to those around you.

If you have difficulties talking about your feelings, you could inadvertently suppress your anger and internalise it causing issues such as:

  • Self-harm
  • Eating disorders
  • Addictions

At One Life Coaching, we can help you find why your anger occurs and provide methods to control and adjust your behaviour.

Anxiety

When you are in an extreme or distressing situation, you will feel anxious; however, sometimes, even when the circumstance is not threatening, you may still feel intense apprehension followed by physical signs such as:

  • Rapid heartbeat
  • Sleeplessness
  • Dizziness
  • Palpitations
  • Irritability

At One Life Coaching, we can help you deal with your anxiety, panic attacks and phobias. We do this by exploring the cause of your feelings and giving you methods you can use to handle such situations when they occur in the future.

Bereavement

When a loved one dies or leaves, it is normal to feel angry, sad or lonely. It is believed that during grief, we have five primary stages we need to work through. These are as follows:

  • Denial
  • Anger
  • Bargaining
  • Depression
  • Acceptance.

There is no set way of progressing through them, and it is common to have setbacks or revisit a stage.

During the COVID-19 Pandemic, many people have suffered Complex Grief due to the restrictions on seeing loved ones before they pass away or attending their funeral. This has deepened the grief many people are going through. At One Life Coaching, we help you work through your feelings in a safe environment so that you can make peace with your loss.

Bullying

Bullying is the term given to a situation when other people cause you significant pain and distress through threats, abuse and intimidation. It includes emotional, verbal, physical, and cyberbullying and can occur regardless of a person’s age – in families, education and at work. At One Life Coaching, we help you work through your emotions caused by these experiences and rebuild your self-worth, self-esteem and confidence, which can often be reduced by bullying.

Child-related issues

Children and teenagers can sometimes need extra support if they find it challenging to deal with or understand their own emotions and behaviours. Parents often need help in these same areas as they find it difficult to understand their feelings and those of their offspring. Teenagers and children can find it hard to express their worries, especially to their parents, and often need a non-judgmental, safe space to explore these, and parents often need the same. More severe issues like mistreatment and abuse often require attention too. At One Life Coaching, we help parents and children work through their emotions and put in parenting and children plans to help the whole family move forward positively.

Cultural issues

In our increasingly multi-racial and multicultural society, it is common for people to need help adjusting to their own cultures and others. When you have to deal with personal and professional relationships that are affected by other cultures, it can put pressure on you to hold onto your own identity and values, which can cause:

  • Anxiety
  • Negative self-image
  • Anger
  • Isolation
  • Low self-esteem
  • Feelings of being different

At One Life Coaching, our extensive knowledge and understanding of the many cultures that we live within means that our Cultural counselling acknowledges the impact these issues can have on your well-being; therefore, we will help you cope with them.

Depression

It is a devastating illness that affects your mood, behaviour, thoughts and body. While some might consider it to be a sign of weakness or failure, that’s not at all true. It can occur to anyone anywhere regardless of their capabilities, and when it occurs, it cannot be changed overnight. If you do not undergo the necessary treatment, the symptoms can persist for years, preventing you from functioning to your full ability. At One Life Coaching, we try to help you find the cause of the depression and make a plan to obtain the life you really want to live.

Eating disorders

They are an extremely common condition with symptoms that can be serious or even life-threatening in the long run. People often use dieting, bingeing and purging as a way to cope with painful emotions, but if these behaviours continue, they will damage your physical and emotional health and self-esteem. At One Life Coaching, we use a combination of Therapy and Coaching to help change thoughts and expectations by providing encouragement and support.

Emotional distress

It is a state of anguish and emotional turmoil that can present itself in various forms, such as changes in appetite or feeling guilty without a cause. It results from either a mental health concern or specific circumstances you are exposed to, like relationship troubles or financial difficulties. Sometimes just talking about the problem with someone who is unbiased and non-judgemental can help put your feelings into perspective.

At One Life Coaching, you can openly speak about personal difficulties and troubles with other aspects of your life such as friends, work and family. The combination of Therapy and Coaching can help you understand what is important to you, so you can prioritise what is necessary and live the life you want.

Infertility

When you are unable to get pregnant or have repeated miscarriages, you could feel various negative emotions that cause you stress and pain. Treatments to address the problems can also be uncomfortable, exhausting and time-consuming, placing a lot of pressure on everyone involved. Talking to a therapist can provide you with comfort and help you come to terms with the situation.

Life skills

At One Life Coaching, we can help you understand your skills and capabilities, so you can utilise them correctly. By doing this, you can:

  • Make your life better
  • Fulfil your potential
  • Realise your ambitions
  • Be happier
  • Be less stressed
  • Be more successful
  • Become more peaceful, sociable and fun

Loss

When many talk about loss, they think of death, and while this is true, the term encapsulates much more. You could lose a job, a relationship or even your health, and it can be an incredibly painful and stressful experience. At One Life Coaching, we can help and support you through this difficult period of your life.

Personal development

At One Life Coaching, we use a combination of Therapy and Coaching to equip you with the knowledge, experience and skills to develop your self-esteem and self-confidence. This enables you to take responsibility for different aspects of your life like:

  • Health
  • Habits
  • Career
  • Relationships
  • finances
  • emotions
  • spiritual beliefs

Phobias

A phobia is an intense, irrational, persistent fear of certain situations, activities, things or people. At One Life Coaching, we will help you understand these thoughts and manage them so you will be able to live your life courageously.

Post-traumatic stress

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a condition that makes you undergo severe psychological and physical symptoms such as hyperventilation and anxiety. They occur when you experience a very frightening or distressing event. You may often relive the event through nightmares and flashbacks. You could have problems concentrating and sleeping and will feel isolated and detached in social situations. The symptoms of this mental health disorder are often highly persistent and severe enough to have a significant impact on your everyday life. There are many therapies that are available today that can help you cope with PTSD, including CBT and Acceptance Therapy, both practised at One Life Coaching.

Pregnancy-related issues and Postpartum Depression

When you undergo pregnancy, regardless of whether it is planned or not, you might feel confused and stressed. You might wonder how it affects your relationships and even your own body and life. At One Life Coaching, we can help you understand your feelings towards your pregnancy or explore difficult emotions following a loss of an unborn child. We can also help you with all the difficulties that arise from Postpartum Depression.

Redundancy

When you no longer have your job or retire, you may feel a sense of loss and confusion, especially if your work played a huge role in shaping your identity. You could also feel anxious about the future and your financial prospects. At One Life Coaching, through a combination of Therapy and Coaching, we help you work through issues of self-esteem and confidence, as well as the practicalities of redundancy.

Relationships

Relationship Therapy and Coaching can allow you to break free from old negative cycles of behaviour and form better bonds with those around you, including your partner and your family.

Self-esteem

When you have low self-esteem, you will view your life in a negative way; thus, making it seem pointless or hopeless. You may also believe that there is no worth to your existence and that most other people are better than you. You could also find it challenging to speak your mind and be assertive; therefore, you may think that others are taking advantage of you or treating you terribly. At One Life Coaching, we will help you understand the way you feel and implement changes to how you perceive yourself and those around you.

Self-harm

To many people, this is a way of coping with difficult and painful feelings and moments of distress. You may either harm yourself because you feel overwhelmed and do not know how to handle the situation or because you are frustrated and the action provides you with relief. Regardless of the reason, it can be incredibly harmful and even life-threatening. At One Life Coaching, we will help you discover and deal with the thoughts and feelings that cause this behaviour.

Sexual abuse

This term is used when one or more people pressure you to take part in sexual activity or a situation relating to it without your consent. It can include photographs, unwanted touching, or even rape. Most victims tend to blame themselves and do not report the abuse due to either family pressure, avoid attention or fear of losing self-respect. Sometimes you may even be influenced to trust the abuser or believe that you will be punished if you report the crime. Abuse in childhood tends to go unaddressed until problems emerge when they are older. Speaking to our experienced therapist and coach in this area can help you rebuild your life and attain peace and calm.

Social anxiety

Also widely known as social phobia or social anxiety disorder, it is a subtype of anxiety disorder that relates to the distress felt in social situations. It can affect the way you communicate with others, not only in large gatherings but also when meeting someone new or a person out of your comfort zone. At One Life Coaching, we will help you discover and deal with the feelings that are causing your anxiety, as well as put plans in place to help you overcome them and move onto stress-free social gatherings.

Stress

While many perceive it to be a wholly negative emotion, that is not really the case. Stress can be positive and help propel you to reach your goals. However, if there is too much of it, your emotional and physical well-being could become compromised. At One Life Coaching, we will help you to manage your life differently or support you in developing coping strategies.

Trauma

When you undergo extremely stressful situations, it can make you feel insecure, helpless and vulnerable, thus making you traumatised. While it can be a one-off event, ongoing experiences such as living in a turbulent home can also cause trauma. Talking to an experienced Trauma Therapist and Coach at One Life Coaching will help you cope better and deal with trauma.

Work-related issues

A normal person can spend up to a quarter of their adult life working. Your job gives you a sense of satisfaction, purpose, and structure while also ensuring you have the means to afford what you need for your daily life. However, if you find yourself in the wrong job or surrounded by people whom you do not like, the experience can become stressful, frustrating and cause your health and self-esteem to decline. If you feel like your personal life is at risk because of your professional one, then you need to seek help from our experienced therapist, who will help you attain stability once again.

There are many other situations where a combination of Therapy and Coaching will unmistakably help put your life back on track towards the life you really desire. Reaching out and taking the first step is the essential aspect. The rest will fall into place afterwards.
