CAREER COUNSELLING AND COACHING

When faced with a change in work circumstances – be it a promotion, a new job, or even a new career – the idea can seem exciting but the fear of change can sometimes hold us back. That’s where that old age phrase comes from “better the devil you know”. Everyone experiences a fear of change to a greater or lesser extent. In fact, our brains will often perceive the feeling of uncertainty as a feeling of risk, danger or failure. That’s why so many people would rather avoid change and remain in their comfort zone, no matter how uneasy that feeling is. We fear change precisely because the outcomes are unknown. Our brains are designed to find peace in knowing. When we don’t know what will happen, we make up scenarios and, in turn, create worry.. The fear of failure also comes into play to create a fear of change. If we don’t know how something will turn out, we may rather not try because the outcome could be bad. These are many of the internal struggles we face to either change career or with promotions. But staying stuck in a job that no longer fulfils us can be just as challenging.
  • Are you struggling to get out of bed in the morning? Dreading your day at work?
  • Are you stuck in a job or career that doesn’t fulfil you?
  • Are you getting passed by on promotions and projects and feeling unappreciated and undervalued?
  • Do you want to uncover your real purpose and passion in work and life?
  • Do you feel you are lacking in communication and emotional intelligence skills which are standing in your way of success?
  • Are you feeling frustrated or demotivated with job searches that just lead to dead ends and rejections?
  • Do you want to make a career change but find that fear stands in the way?

Trying something new becomes a risk, a risk that may lead to failure so even though our gut tells us to make a change, inertia, self-doubt and financial worries hold us in deeply established routines, routines that in reality may no longer serve us, but we remain there.

Practicing Career Counselling and Career Coaching in the Middle East for the past 20 years, with a diverse client base from every nationality and culture, we’ve been able to gain huge insight as to the many and diverse reasons people become stagnant or staid in their careers and thus we’ve been able to create personalized solutions, within the appropriate cultural boundaries and norms of my clients, to help those clients navigate their way through their inertia towards their jobs.

feeling stuck in lifeMany of my clients come to me because at the end of their high school journey they fell into the old concept of how a career brings you happiness: that is, that happiness comes from having financial stability or status or a guaranteed job for life. Many of my clients tell me that they had a choice of three or maybe four careers that their family would accept them to go into – for example careers such as engineering, law or medicine. These types of careers were deemed to not only bring the secure pay cheque but along with that, all the other “stuff” that was deemed back then to bring happiness – be it the big house, the impressive car, the huge bank balance, the pension, or even a spouse and children. All these outside elements do indeed bring a certain amount of happiness, and of course children can bring a huge amount of meaning to life, but they only bring happiness if we have an internal sense of happiness, satisfaction and purpose to start with – if we are living a life that aligns to our values and passions. Don’t get me wrong, if you are passionate about your career in any of the examples we listed above, then you are on the right path. It’s when my clients are totally misaligned with their career choice that the challenges start.

Other clients come because they were passionate about their career once upon a time, they did make the right choice for them back then, but now that career has ran its course and they are seeking a change. Thy just don’t know what that change might be and how to go about making it.

Other clients are not misaligned – they genuinely love their jobs – but are lacking in the confidence needed to get noticed and promoted to their real level of competence. They seem to be forever being passed over for that promotion, that big project, that new initiative, which eventually brings them down and leads back to the inertia we mentioned above.

Do you find yourself aligning to any of the above categories? And as a consequence, do you find yourself suffering from any of the below factors:

  • A lack of mental stimulation
  • An inability to drive change and creativity
  • Fear and Insecurity over your performance level leading to fear and insecurity over possible job loss
  • Eroded confidence in your ability, leading to low mood and anxiety
  • Imposter Syndrome
  • Co-workers and bosses who don’t align to your beliefs or values or to the core you
  • Careers that don’t align to your values, desires and beliefs and to the core you

If so it may be time for a change.
To add to this 2020 and the Pandemic has added new stressors to our work life that might be derailing you aswell such as:

  • Anxiety caused by remote working and a lack of personal contact with colleagues leading to a feeling of isolation
  • Anxiety that your performance will not be acknowledged due to the nature of remote working
  • Fear that your voice won’t be heard from this remote working environment.
  • Anxiety about returning back to an office environment.

All the above can lead to a lack of confidence and self-belief.

Career Coaching will help you clarify exactly what your issues are at work and then help you to make positive changes in your current role or seek new opportunities more closely aligned with your individual passions and desires.

At the end of the day, once our basic needs are met – basic needs being enough food, water, shelter and sleep – we all dream of having something in our lives that absorbs us into the current moment, creating a life in the ‘flow‘ – a blissful immersion into the task or activity. This type of ‘flow’ of engagement stretches our intelligence, skills, and emotional capabilities. This is when work becomes play and play becomes work and time simply flies by as you experience a sense of engagement in your work and task.

Having goals and ambition in life can help us to achieve things that can give us a sense of accomplishment, but achievement is not just about a strong sense of success or ‘winning,’, it also refers to how much we challenge ourselves in positive and progressive ways, that enable us to further develop our strengths and skills, both practically and emotionally. Finding achievement in these ways helps to encourage further positive emotions, such as confidence, and adds to our continued sense of happiness and well-being.

Aligning your values and beliefs to the impact of your work and why you chose to “show up” helps you enjoy your work tasks and become more satisfied with what you do. As human beings, we need to be able to feel good, hopeful, and inspired by the things we do and the life we live. It’s easy to see how, when we do, we can allow our positive emotions to take the lead in our life.
